Learning, networking, and sharing insights—that was the essence of the BioSC SummerSchool on Alternative Proteins, held from 2nd to 6th September at RWTH Aachen.

Two of MAFO’s PhD students, Bodo Rehm and Jana Kilimann, were among the 21 highly motivated international doctoral researchers who participated in this exciting and intellectually stimulating event.

The SummerSchool provided a rich platform for discussions with experts, the creation of new networks, and the exploration of cutting-edge research on alternative protein sources. Participants dove into topics such as:

  • Plants, fungi, insects, and algae as protein sources
  • Breeding, selection, and optimization of production processes
  • Processing protein sources into meat-like or dairy products
  • The use of proteins in food, feed, and aquaculture
  • Legal frameworks and acceptance for novel foods

Bodo Rehm presented a talk on "Influences on Alternative Protein Markets and Acceptance – Lupin in Germany," sharing insights from his work in the P3roLucas project.

Both PhD students left the SummerSchool with new perspectives, deeper knowledge, and expanded networks that will undoubtedly benefit their research and future careers.
