PD Dr. agr. Wolfgang Britz
Head of the Economic Modeling of Agricultural Systems Group
In his position as group leader, Wolfgang Britz is part of various research projects which deal with agro-economic issues on a business or economic level. He supervises PhD students and is a senior lecturer in the AFECO Master's programme and in various PhD seminars.
Global Lead Macro-Economic Modeling at the World Bank
Wolfgang Britz was on leave at the World Bank (09-2022 to 08/2023) implementing his CGE modelling platform CGEBox and working on various research projects. Since 9/2023, he continues to work part-time for the World Bank.
About Wolfgang Britz
Wolfgang Britz is a senior researcher and lecturer in a tenured position at the Institute for Food and Resource Economics, University Bonn. His research focus is on the impacts of agricultural, environmental and trade policies on the agricultural sector, the environment and rural areas. Methodically, his quantitative analysis are based on different types of economic simulation models.
Wolfgang Britz developed the first versions of the CAPRI modeling system and contributed until 2012 to its evolvement as a global economic simulation model for trade in agricultural and food products combined with detailed bio-economic supply models for European agriculture, including coordinating large-scale EU funded research projects focusing on CAPRI. Since 2015, he develops the CGEBox modeling system for which he was awarded a GTAP research fellowship.
Since 2017, Wolfgang Britz leads the Economic Modeling of Agricultural Systems group after acting as temporary head of the "Production Economics" chair in 2016. Besides his work at the University of Bonn, he regularly consults governments and international organizations such as the World Bank, EU Commission, OECD or FAO based on quantitative impact assessments and in methodological matters relating to economic simulation models.
In his spare time, Wolfgang Britz enjoys cooking, canoeing and playing keyboard in two bands.

Awards
GTAP Research Fellow Award 2022-2025
Award for:
Major contributions to modular CGE models and systems combining different model types such as GTAP and CAPRI, and also for contributing to the methodological development of model linkage and meta-modeling, and his current work on a re-cursive dynamic variant of CGEBox for long-term baseline construction.
GTAP Research Fellow Award 2019 - 2022
Award for:
Significant advances in promoting the GTAP framework through the development of satellite data, especially in agriculture, and for the development of the CGEBox modeling software, which provides a flexible, extendable and modular code basis for CGE modeling in GAMS drawing on the GTAP Data Base, combined with a powerful user interface based on GGIG (GAMS Graphical User Interface Generator).
